The World Hand Hygiene Day reminds us every year on 5 May of the importance of washing our hands. Simple, yet easy to forget habit that can very much save lives! Like last year, the COVID-19 reality of what’s happening with the global pandemic puts washing your hands front of mind. The worldwide initiative started back in 2009 to promote the importance of clean hands. Nowadays, it goes well beyond that, and this year, the big theme is “Achieving hand hygiene at the point of care” where “seconds save lives!”

Point of care (POC) is the place where three elements come together: the patient, the healthcare worker, care or treatment involving contact with the patient or his/her surroundings. It is recommended that hand hygiene is performed when care is being delivered. It’s all about infection prevention and control! World Health Organisation (WHO) gives all the guidance here.
